THE OXIDANE PROJECT
The Oxidane Project is a project created by Semester 4 Integrated M.A English Language and Literature students as a part of the subject Environmental Science and Sustainability.
The Oxidane Project aims to spread awareness about Water Pollution, and its detrimental effects on life- how damaging, hazardous and deleterious it is to both aquatic life and human beings.
Why ‘Oxidane’?
‘Oxidane’ is the IUPAC name for water.
Water is formed by covalent bonds between 2 Hydrogen atoms and an Oxygen atom. Covalent bonds involve sharing of electron pairs, and we have extended this idea to spread awareness in regards to how balance should be honored and nurtured between the bonds of human beings and water.
In simplest terms, water makes up about 71% of the Earth’s surface, while the other 29% consists of continents and islands. To break the numbers down, 96.5% of all the Earth’s water is contained within the oceans as salt water, while the remaining 3.5% is freshwater lakes and frozen water locked up in glaciers and the polar ice caps.
What percent of Earth is water? (phys.org)
Water covers about 71% of the Earth’s surface, it covers more than half of the globe holding and supporting life, but we have exploited and corrupted this natural resource instead of conserving it.
Globally, 80% of wastewater flows back into the ecosystem without being treated or reused, contributing to a situation where around 1.8 billion people use a source of drinking water contaminated with faeces, putting them at risk of contracting cholera, dysentery, typhoid and polio. Far from being something to discard or ignore, wastewater will play a major role in meeting the growing water demand in rapidly expanding cities, enhancing energy production and industrial development, and supporting sustainable agriculture.

More than 80% of waste water is being disposed into the water bodies polluting the water and the life it supports and holds.
Through the columns, reports, accounts and write-ups we feature and publish on this site, we aim and hope to spread awareness, do our tiny bit towards helping the world understand the causes and effects of water pollution, and do our part in inspiring positive action : suggesting effective solutions and methods to control and curb pollution and bring to light the fact that if we stay united in this process together, we will indeed be successful in our attempts to conserve water and eliminate water pollution.
